Memorial Dedication Saturday 30 May 2015 @ 1:00 PM
Despite the extensive vandalism that occurred on overnight on May 9th the dedication will proceed. We will not let this take away anything from the Memorial and the plan is to have it looking good as new before the 30th.
A big thank you goes out to members of the community, the City of Sudbury, Veterans Affairs and Surface Design and Décor who have all pledged to aid in ensuring the Memorial comes back as good as new.
For the dedication there will be a parade from the Coniston Mall down Second Ave to the Memorial site. The parade will include the Legion, Second Irish Regiment of Canada, Dignitaries, and The Sudbury and District Pipe Band. Afterwards there will be a free bbq in the park, historical display (with many items related to those names on the Memorial) and the Pipe Band will play. On May 10 2014 during the spring cleanup, soil and grass seed was added around the memorial and the sword to replace the original one that was stolen was fitted and the reflecting pool was cleared of leaves and water conditioner added. The sword will be placed on the memorial in a couple of weeks.
On Saturday 21 Sept 2013 at 8:30am we will be meeting at the old memorial to remove all of the old brick, flag poles etc. Anybody that wants to come out to help out on this is more than welcome. Also we will be finalizing most of the memorial by putting up the 3 flag poles, finalizing the reflecting pool, and a general clean up of the area. The only remaining item will be putting in the propellers from the old memorial but there is some groundwork required first.
The groundwork is complete and a large part of the project will be completed on Tuesday Sept 10 2013. There are some other items to be completed after this time (flag poles, lighting, water fill up) but for the most part it will really take shape on Sept 10th.
Donations are accepted through the Coniston Community Action Network Memorial Committee. Please Contact Kirk Langdon for further information at [email protected].
